We all suffer from tiredness and problems sleeping from time to time. But when it happens regularly, it can have a huge effect on our health and lifestyle. And with as many as 16 million adults in the UK saying they suffer from insomnia, and almost half not getting the right amount of rest, it’s no surprise an increasing number of people are looking to use CBD oil for sleep and insomnia.

The problems caused by poor sleep aren’t just feeling grumpier than normal or not being able to work at your best. Not getting the right amount of rest can lower your immunity to illness, make you more likely to put on weight, and make you more susceptible to both diabetes and heart disease.

Missing out on enough sleep can also lower your sex drive and fertility. And chronic sleep problems can contribute to long-term mood disorders including depression and anxiety.

If you suspect you might suffer from insomnia, common symptoms include if you regularly:

  • find it hard to go to sleep
  • wake up several times during the night
  • lie awake at night
  • wake up early and can't go back to sleep
  • still feel tired after waking up
  • find it hard to nap during the day even though you're tired
  • feel tired and irritable during the day
  • find it difficult to concentrate during the day because you're tired

You can also take a sleep self-assessment via the NHS website.

What causes sleep problems and insomnia?

There can be many reasons for you to have trouble sleeping. Common causes include noise, room temperature, uncomfortable beds, various drugs ranging from alcohol and caffeine to cocaine and ecstasy, or shift work.

Sleepless can also be caused by some illnesses, or the medication used to treat them. But some of the most common causes of sleep problems are stress, anxiety or depression.

And with increased levels of stress and mood disorders due to the challenges of modern life, a large number of people can potentially benefit from using CBD Oil for sleep and insomnia.

It can also have a beneficial effect on dealing with aches and pain which can disrupt your sleep normally.

Why use CBD Oil for Sleep and Insomnia?

There are lots of ways you can encourage a good night of sleep. Having a consistent routine, relaxing before bed, and avoiding big meals and electronic devices will help. So will a comfortable bed, a dark and quiet bedroom, and exercise (but not in the four hours before you want to go to sleep).

Beyond this, you’ll usually be prescribed therapy or sleeping aids. And many of the medical solutions have many side effects including drowsiness for the next 24 hours.

It's important to also look at sleep quality, not just the amount of time you spend in bed. A deeper, more restful time will give more benefit in a short period than lighter, more fitful sleeping.

The good news is that using CBD Oil for sleep and insomnia can help you achieve the rest you need, without making you sedated or drowsy.

Why Use CBD Oil for Sleep and Insomnia?

CBD Oil can be consumed or applied in the way you prefer. And once it’s absorbed into the body, it interacts with receptors within your nervous system. By improving your cognitive function and the ability of your brain and central nervous system to cope with stress, it can alleviate the current causes of insomnia, and help to prevent it occurring in the future.

And because CBD Oil can stimulate alertness and reduce daytime sleepiness, you won’t disrupt your routine by needing a nap. Or struggle to get through the day because you’re tired or grumpy.

Using CBD Oil for sleep and insomnia means you’re potentially solving the causes of your sleep problem rather than the symptoms. And it can also improve the sleep you’re getting. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep is the unique period of dreaming and body movement unique to humans and other mammals.

Although the exact function of REM Sleep isn’t precisely understood, it’s thought to be the process of storing memories, learning and balancing your mood. And during several periods of REM sleep each night, the brain signals to the body to largely stop moving whilst you dream, known as REM atonia. But some people, including those with Parkinson’s disease, are left free to move during REM sleep, which can disrupt rest. And also lead to potential injuries for both the sufferer and anyone sharing their bed. Studies are beginning to show that using CBD Oil for sleep and insomnia can help to reduce this problem.

Summarising the Benefits of Using CBD Oil for Sleep and Insomnia:

  • More alertness and reduces daytime sleepiness
  • Can help to alleviate the sources of sleeplessness and insomnia, rather than just the symptoms
  • Can improve the quality of sleep by alleviating REM behaviour disorder (moving whilst dreaming in REM Sleep)
  • Can reduce the need for sleep aids and medication which can have significant side effects.

What to check before using CBD Oil for Sleep and Insomnia:

The World Health Organization has concluded that cannabidiol (CBD) ‘does not appear to have abuse potential or cause harm’. And the majority of adults won’t experience any negative effects. Some potential side effects due include dry mouth, feeling lightheaded or low blood pressure.

However, CBD does interact with the liver enzymes involved in breaking down some prescribed medicines for a variety of conditions. So if you’re already using medication of any kind, you should speak to your doctor before using CBD Oil for sleep and insomnia.

CBD Oil can also interact with other herbs and supplements used to promote sleepiness. So if you’ve already been taking sleep supplements without much success, you should switch to CBD Oil alone, rather than using them in combination.

How to take CBD Oil for Sleep and Insomnia:

The right time and dosage of CBD Oil for sleep and insomnia will vary from individual to individual. So you’ll need to be patient to find the right amount and schedule to give you the best benefits. In general, you’ll probably need to take CBD Oil for at least 1-2 weeks to start feeling the results.

By beginning with a low dosage and working up, you’ll be able to find the right dosage to suit your needs. If you’re using CBD oil for sleep and insomnia due to pain, you will probably settle on a higher dosage than for stress and anxiety, for example.

How To Take CBD Oil for Sleep and Insomnia

Some people find that taking CBD at a regular time in the morning has the best overall positive effect for dealing with anxiety, daytime tiredness and improving their sleep.

Others can find they get an initial waking feeling from CBD, and taking it too close to bedtime can hinder falling asleep. So having your dose 2-3 hours before you plan on sleeping can help. Certainly it’s best to take it at least 30-60 minutes before bedtime.

Can CBD Cause Insomnia?

The short answer is no - insomnia is not a side effect of taking CBD. As mentioned above, CBD can make you more alert and awake, which means you may struggle to get to sleep if you take your CBD immediately before going to bed. But this will pass in 1-3 hours. So this isn't insomnia, and won't be an issue by using CBD by late evening.

If you stop regularly using CBD to aid your sleep, this may also alter your sleep patterns. As a result, if you decide to stop, it's best to lower your dosage gradually (unless there's a health reason to halt immediately).

Can You Take CBD With Melatonin?

Melatonin is a neurohormone naturally produced by glands in your brain in the evening to help you sleep. And as a result, supplements are available to boost your melatonin and help you get a good night of rest.

So far studies have shown relatively little side effects, although headaches, depression and dizziness have occurred in some cases. But it is only recommended as a short-term sleep aid.

Currently there's no studies or evidence looking at specific chemical interactions between CBD and melatonin. Using both can potentially produce a greater effect on improving your sleep, and shouldn't carry any increased risks. But obviously you should consult a doctor or medical professional with any specific concerns regarding using any supplement alone or in combination.
